David Kilgour’s Iranian History

David Kilgour’s Iranian History

As published in the Hill Times: July 14, 2021

Former Canadian parliamentarian David Kilgour recently criticized new Iranian president Raisi’s ugly record of torture, killing and anti-dissident violence. However, Kilgour’s claim that Raisi’s election will worsen Middle East “instability” is less reliable, since that claim is based on an unspoken assumption: only nations who serve Western interests may be considered moderate and stable. That includes cooperative dictatorships.

Hamas' Rockets VS. The "Goliath" of Israel (no contest)

Washington Report on Middle East Affairs

HAMAS’ ROCKETS VS. THE “GOLIATH” OF ISRAEL (NO CONTEST)

What is worse, open hostility to an established state or preventing the founding of another? According to the mainstream media, Hamas’ hostility to Israel is a graver matter than Binyamin Netanyahu’s refusal to even consider the idea of “another” Palestinian state east of the Jordan River. Netanyahu and many senior Israelis consider Jordan a Palestinian state.

Prince Philip’s Greatness was Pretty Ordinary

LETTER: Prince Philip was just an average guy who married money and power

Minimum Wage Solution: Shift Corporate Subsidies to Small Business

As published in the Hill Times: April 7, 2021

Opponents of raising the minimum wage consistently claim that such increases would harm or even destroy small business. This argument may easily be refuted by revealing an obvious but apparently unmentionable solution.

Without Irony, Israel Condemns Hezbollah’s UN Violations

Washington Report on Middle East Affairs: April-March 2021

Without Irony, Israel Condemns Hezbollah’s UN Violations

Israeli officials are claiming that Hezbollah’s violation of a 2006 United Nations resolution somehow justifies the intimidating presence of low-altitude Israel war planes in Lebanese air space. The 2006 UN Resolution forbade Hezbollah “…from building up its military capabilities and operating near the Israeli border…” UN Resolutions notwithstanding; foreign aircraft that violate Israeli air space have a low survival rate.

Canada Should Emulate Argentina’s Wealth Tax

As published in the Ottawa Citizen: 30 December 2020

Canada would be wise to emulate Argentina’s recent adoption of a one-time wealth tax of one percent on those earning over a million dollars per year. The Argentine measure was designed to fund the post-Covid recovery and slow the growth of their federal deficit. Recently, the governing Liberals, Conservatives and Bloc Quebecois combined to reject a similar NDP motion that would have reduced Canada’s huge and growing deficit.

Double Standard on Iran

DOUBLE STANDARD ON IRAN

As published in the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs (WRMEA): Nov. / Dec. 2020

The Iranian government recently agreed to allow United Nations inspectors to enter the country and examine their nuclear facilities. This reasonable policy is particularly notable when compared to that of Iran’s main regional rivals, particularly Israel.
