War Remains a Permanent Feature of Human Existence

As published in the Hill Times: November 16, 2022

In addition to protecting Canada’s land and maritime areas the Canadian Forces (CF) are active around the world. This includes NATO operations, marine patrols and the provision of military training.

The fact that Canada is not officially at war does not lessen the danger to CF personnel, especially UN peacekeepers in active conflict zones and contested areas.

Israel Obstinately Rejects Legitimate Criticism

As published in the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs: Nov. / Dec. 2022 Vol. XLI, No. 7

A recent article by Abraham Global Peace Initiative (AGPI) CEO Avi Benolo is titled: “Israel Strong in the Face of Growing Progressive Obstinacy”. Unfortunately, the piece offers shaky assumptions and lacks historical context to balance its strident appeal to emotion. For example, Benolo’s AGPI wrongly assumes that Israel represents the interests of all Jews.

Kissinger a Poor Choice for Ukrainian Conflict Resolution

Kissinger a Poor Choice for Ukrainian Conflict Resolution

As published in Esprit de Corps: 1 August 2022

It has been suggested that Henry Kissinger’s so-called realpolitik might offer a solution to the ongoing violence in Ukraine. Perhaps Dr. Kissinger has reinvented himself as sincere peacemaker but I doubt it. Kissinger’s past expertise mainly involved cynically fomenting conflict at the behest of U.S. imperialism.

Canada silent as Israel raids Palestinian human rights offices in West Bank

As published in the Hill Times: September 5, 2022

The recent Israeli raid on a Palestinian human rights office reminded me that Israel employed secret evidence in 2021 to categorize six Palestinian human rights groups as terrorist organizations. This is hardly news, since the Israeli state routinely targets Palestinians who dares advocate for themselves with any effectiveness.

Canadian government’s “working definition of antisemitism”

The Canadian government’s embrace of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) “working definition of antisemitism” is troubling, given the government’s indifference to Israel’s illegal occupation of conquered Palestinian territory and ongoing defiance of the Geneva Convention and United Nations Resolutions.

Canada Must Stop Supporting Israeli Weapons Industry

As published in the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs (WRMEA) – June/July 2022

Canada recently signed a $36 million contract to buy Hermes Starliner drones from Elbit, an Israeli company that also manufactures the cluster bombs, bullets and corrosive white phosphorus shells used to attack both Hamas and civilians in Gaza.

Victoria Day Ripe for Royal Reflection

Victoria Day Ripe for Royal Reflection

As published in the Hill Times: May 25, 2022

As the memory of prince Charles’ Ottawa visit fades, I’m left wondering why he didn’t linger to celebrate Victoria Day. Perhaps he anticipated a barrage of awkward questions from those seeking redress for past royal misconduct?

Harper’s Israeli Foreign Legion

Harper’s Israeli Foreign Legion

As previously-published in the Leveller: Spring 2015

Recent revelations of Israeli soldiers protesting brutal IDF rules of engagement in Gaza cause me to question the Harper government’s narrow definition of terrorism. These soldiers had been ordered to shoot Palestinian women and children stranded in so-called “free fire zones” reminiscent of the Vietnam era. These dissident troops join other Israelis who refuse to participate in IDF violence in Gaza, East Jerusalem, the West Bank and on the Mediterranean Sea.
