Anonymous Shareholders Benefit from Canadian Taxpayer-funded Subsidies

Anonymous Shareholders Benefit from Canadian Taxpayer-funded Subsidies

The Hill Times: 24 May 2023

As the governments of Ontario and Canada compete to subsidize manufacturers of electric car batteries and other so-called clean technologies, there is scant discussion of private profit at public risk.

Examine Monarchy’s Ideological and Political Role

As prince Charles’ coronation approaches, we ought to examine royalty’s ideological and political role before pomp and ceremony eclipses reality.

Taps Always Open for Private Profit at Public Expense

I noticed this Toronto Sun editorial comment at the end of a Nov. 23 reader’s letter on worker’s wages:

“(With government, expanding constantly, and offering more and more services we cannot afford, the money has to come from somewhere)”

There is one service that government eagerly subsidizes: private profit at public risk and expense. Perhaps the editors are unaware of the following information.

Individual monarchs not racist but institution different story

As published in the Guardian 15 Nov. 2022

Unfortunately, Bloc Quebecois leader Yves Blanchet correctly describes the British monarchy as a “racist” and “archaic" institution. That admission does not support his separatism or validate his presence in Canada’s parliament.

War Remains a Permanent Feature of Human Existence

In addition to protecting Canada’s land and maritime areas the Canadian Forces (CF) are active around the world. This includes NATO operations, marine patrols and the provision of military training.

The fact that Canada is not officially at war does not lessen the danger to CF personnel, especially UN peacekeepers in active conflict zones and contested areas.

Israel Obstinately Rejects Legitimate Criticism

As published in the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs: Nov. / Dec. 2022 Vol. XLI, No. 7

A recent article by Abraham Global Peace Initiative (AGPI) CEO Avi Benolo is titled: “Israel Strong in the Face of Growing Progressive Obstinacy”. Unfortunately, the piece offers shaky assumptions and lacks historical context to balance its strident appeal to emotion. For example, Benolo’s AGPI wrongly assumes that Israel represents the interests of all Jews.

Kissinger a Poor Choice for Ukrainian Conflict Resolution

Kissinger a Poor Choice for Ukrainian Conflict Resolution

As published in Esprit de Corps: 1 August 2022

It has been suggested that Henry Kissinger’s so-called realpolitik might offer a solution to the ongoing violence in Ukraine. Perhaps Dr. Kissinger has reinvented himself as sincere peacemaker but I doubt it. Kissinger’s past expertise mainly involved cynically fomenting conflict at the behest of U.S. imperialism.

Canada silent as Israel raids Palestinian human rights offices in West Bank

As published in the Hill Times: September 5, 2022

The recent Israeli raid on a Palestinian human rights office reminded me that Israel employed secret evidence in 2021 to categorize six Palestinian human rights groups as terrorist organizations. This is hardly news, since the Israeli state routinely targets Palestinians who dares advocate for themselves with any effectiveness.
