Canadian Voters Misled by Mainstream Media on Middle East Affairs
Inverness Oran: 7 May, 2025
A recent mainstream media editorial suggests that the electoral losses of certain MPs are linked to their support for Palestinian independence and opposition to Israeli military aggression in Gaza, the West Bank and elsewhere.
The piece categorizes even peaceful opposition to Israeli military aggression as antisemitic, even though many Canadian Jews are appalled by the results of Israel’s military policies. Referring to those who condemn Israeli genocide and ethnic-cleansing as antisemitic is a fallacious tactic designed to chill debate and silence critical voices at a time when public discourse is vital.
Perhaps Canadian voters would appreciate broader and deeper coverage of Israel’s historical plan to reorder the Middle East to suit their ambitions and those of the U.S. government, all in defiance of U.N. Resolutions and International Law. Were such information publicized and presented with chronological context, the ill-intent behind casual accusations of antisemitism would be more obvious and thus easier to refute.
The Israeli government fears peaceful and rational opposition because Netanyahu and his extremist coalition know they cannot win the political and legal argument. Instead, they habitually employ U.S.-backed military force as a default response to all challenges. The Israeli version of "peace" is the imposition of their will on the militarily-weaker Palestinians who, aside from Hezbollah and the Houthis, have no significant allies.
This situation is not what some call "...the war in the Middle East..." because no official war has been declared by any party. As awful as the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack was, it did not occur spontaneously but was the natural response of Gaza’s desperate people to years of crushing Israeli blockades and high-tech bombardment that has killed and wounded thousands of civilians while also destroying hospital and schools.
While Hamas has committed terrible atrocities, they receive no military, economic or diplomatic support from the U.S. and Canada. Ironically, Hamas has historically been financed by the Israeli government to oppose the other Palestinian faction, Fatah.
By comparison, America and Canada offer uncritical support and protection to the Israeli state and are thus complicit in its grave violations of International Law and United Nations Resolutions. This uncomfortable fact cannot be changed by specious accusations of antisemitism.
