Canada on Israel’s Destruction of Gaza and its People: Bold Words - Zero Action

Canada on Israel’s Destruction of Gaza and its People: Bold Words - Zero Action

Halifax Herald: 18 August 2025

Prime Minister Carney has expressed his displeasure with Israel’s ongoing campaign of slaughter, starvation and destruction in Gaza and the West Bank. Unfortunately, he has chosen to mimic his predecessors and avoid taking serious action against the Israeli state and its Canadian enablers.

Unlike the Hague Group of 20 nations who announced, “…the denial of arms to Israel, a ban on ships transporting such arms and a review of public contracts for possible links to companies that benefit from the Israeli occupation,” Canada offers only words.

I wrote an unanswered letter to Mr. Carney and posed the following questions:

Why do you offer nothing but platitudes as Israeli destroys the Palestinian people and seizes their property?

Are you afraid of baseless but damaging accusations of antisemitism?

Are you under pressure from Canadians profiting from Israeli trade?

Perhaps you fear American retaliation?

I write now while it remains legal to criticize Canada’s conduct regarding the activities of the Israeli state. Recent American developments justify my concerns about state repression of free speech.

Unless Canada opposes Israel’s violent campaign to re-organize the Middle East, the world will eventually consider Canada complicit through indifference and our reputation will be forever tarnished.
