Flotilla Response Should be Considered Piracy Under International Law

Israeli Navy – High-Tech Pirates of the Mediterranean

Hill Times: 6 May 2026

The Israeli state has presented both the 2025 and recent 2026 Global Summud Flotillas as major threats to its security. The apparent crime of these peaceful sailors was their attempt to break Israel’s illegal 20-year Gaza blockade to deliver food and medicine to Palestinians still suffering an ongoing genocide lingering under a so-called ceasefire. That “ceasefire” has killed over 800 Palestinians since October 10, 2025.

A United Nations official recently, “…warned that the situation in Gaza was steadily worsening…” The Israeli-imposed shortage of food, water, medicine and shelter is intended to demoralize Gaza’s people and drive them elsewhere. Israeli officials actually accused Flotilla organizers of interfering with Trump’s Board of Peace scheme.

Once again, unarmed Flotilla activists were threatened, humiliated and beaten while 175 were temporarily “detained” by Israeli forces after their boats were disabled and set adrift. Among that number were 6 Canadians who received little help from Canada’s timid government. As well, thirty-four activists have been hospitalized in Greece and two men were taken to Israel for interrogation as supposed security threats.

It is useful to view current events in the context of 2010 when Israeli naval commandos attacked an aid ship in international waters, killing 9 civilians and losing 6 soldiers. Global outrage over the 2010 violence caused Israeli officials to adopt a less lethal approach to Gaza aid activists on the high seas.

This time the Israeli military seized 22 of the Flotilla’s 58 vessels off Crete’s coast, over 900 kilometres from Israel. Such conduct is considered piracy under International Law, although no world power has been willing to seriously confront the Israeli government and take punitive action to sanction an aggressive state that still enjoys the impunity of total U.S. support.
