Trudeau’s Gun Laws: A Work in Progress

As published in the Victoria Standard: April 11, 2018

Trudeau’s proposed firearms legislation may actually reduce gun violence, especially in large cities like Toronto and Ottawa where violence committed with smuggled and stolen guns is increasing. While Canada’s problem is tiny compared to the U.S., similar nations like Australia and the U.K. suffer far less gun crime.

Recent Gaza Turmoil: Missing Context and Censorship

Below is a textbook example of corporate editors censoring inconvenient facts that contradict the dominant narrative on Israel/Palestine while they pretend to offer balanced coverage. The most dissonant information was “removed from inspection” since these gatekeepers deem the public unfit to respond in a suitable manner. The veracity of the missing information is therefore treated as a problem rather than a matter of public interest.

I welcome the possibility that Justin Trudeau may have mentioned past separatist violence in Quebec while discussing Sikh independence with India’s leaders. Hopefully, Trudeau’s alleged remarks will inspire public discourse on the darker aspects of Quebec’s persistent separatist movement. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s abstention on the recent U.N. vote against Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital was both predictable and firmly rooted in Canada’s history of official support for Zionism at the expense of Palestinian Arabs. Canada’s non-Jewish Zionists include Biblical literalists and other Christians seeking the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies.

Federal employment grants were a regular part of summer life in Baddeck during the seventies and early eighties. Public funding helped staff Kidston Island and provided summer workers for a host of businesses and organizations; maybe including some with “Christian” core mandates opposing abortion.

Lawyers whose Canadian clients use offshore tax havens often emphasize the legality and popularity of the practice among those who can afford their expensive services. The evolution of this reality and its implications for Canada’s future are worth considering since lost tax revenues present a genuine threat to the operation of government programs. Increasingly, the tax burden is shifting to working people since few Canadians are positioned to legally park their money beyond the taxman’s reach.
